Ex-Speaker says he'll join opposition

QUEZON CITY (PinoyNews) - Members of the House of Representatives have ousted as their leader by a vote of 174-35 with 16 abstentions five-time Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. of the fourth district of Pangasinan.

After deliberations which lasted up to the wee hours of the morning, th e lawmakers voted unanimously to elect Davao City Rep. Prospero Nograles, Jr. as the new Speaker.

De Venecia, 71, saying he wanted to “rapidly unite this divided House, himself nominated Nograles and acclaimed him as an outstanding leader of Congress and a good friend.

Majority Leader Arthur Defensor then moved to acclaim the nomination of Nograles, 61, a bar topnotcher, which was approved unanimously by the entire plenary. Nograles is the first lawmaker from Mindanao to win the plum post in 100 years.

His uncontested election came at 12:55 Tuesday after a marathon session that opened at 4 p.m. of Monday. Before his ouster, de Venecia delivered an impassioned hour-long speech in which he attacked President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and family and alleged anomalies in government, including the controversial ZTE contract and the elections. >> Read more
