On June 17, 2006 I had a telephone conversation with a friend of mine who also happens to be a broadcast host in the “alternative media”. Most people would characterize his broadcast and his organization as “secular” rather than as “religious”, although he has had several people on his broadcast to discuss topics that fall in the realm of “religion”. So I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised when he noted that if we talked about the Vatican “on air” (i.e., on his broadcast), then people would say that we would be entering into a discussion of “religion”. I think we need to answer the three questions that are asked in the “three-part title” of this article concerning the Vatican. We will start first with the second question:
