SANTO DOMINGO.- Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez said it’s urgent that the Government acquires the Super Tucano airplanes to fight against what he caked an increase in drug trafficking, despite Washington’s opposition.

Lopez, who participated in an Episcopal Conference in Quito, Ecuador, agrees with President Leonel Fernandez’s call for all sectors to join the Government’s search for solutions to the ills that affect the population.

The prelate laments that Congress has yet to approve the funds needed to buy the patrol planes, a request he said has become an outcry of all Dominican society. "I understand that the country cannot continue unprotected from this evil, the national territory needs to be protected and that’s why we feel that it’s time not only for the airplanes to be bought, but everything that’s necessary to confront narcotics traffic more successfully."

Lopez said the Dominican side of the border with Haiti is practically unprotected and the controls need to be doubled, even if the United States opposes the downing of airplanes. "The United States cannot speak much, because it doesn’t want the country to address the matter, especially the topic of the airplanes."
