A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck near Salta, Argentina, hours after a devastating quake that hit neighboring Chile earlier in the day, the US Geological Survey said.

The tremor hit at 12.45pm local time (2.45am AEDT) at a depth of 23.7 miles (38.2 kilometers). The epicenter was about 13 miles (20 km) from Salta, close to the Bolivian border in the north of the country.

At least 122 people were killed in the Chile quake, which has sparked tsunami warning across the Pacific.

There have been numerous aftershocks following the 8.8-magnitude that hit Chile in the early hours yesterday.
