The WSJ reports:
Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Gov. David Paterson have asked the federal government to bar New York City food-stamp recipients from using the benefit to buy sugary drinks, an effort to determine if the move would decrease obesity and diabetes problems.
The request, sent late Wednesday to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, could affect an estimated 1.7 million city residents who receive food stamps. As much as $135 million in federal nutrition benefits is used to buy sugar-sweetened drinks, the mayor’s office said. . .
Food-stamp users cannot use benefits to buy alcohol and cigarettes. The request asks that the USDA allow city officials to have two years to assess if sugary-drink purchases drop, as well as problems associated with diabetes and obesity, a mayoral spokeswoman said. The proposal would not affect the total benefits received, she said.
So is this an example of over-weening paternalism? Or is it a responsible limitation on government assistance?

That's the reason I picked that photo to go with the article.
Notice this is not only a Roman Catholic cleric, but, a Franciscan monk. These guys amaze me for their garb. In an age when most western folks dress in civilian up-to-date clothing, these clerics choose to wear medieval garb reminiscent of the monks of the Dark Ages. The first time I noticed this phenomena was 7 years ago when a relative invited me to a municipal government recognition function; there I saw a man up on stage wearing this peculiar brown burlap gown with a hood. I was awe struck since I hadn't seen one of these in person before.
This picture was from a news conference during the heated controversy about the "Islamic Outreach Center near Ground Zero"; Here we see a bevy of religionist surrounding Mayer Bloomingdales, perhaps affirming the dawn of a new ecumenical age. Yet, another sign of the times: It's what for dinner!
So yes, this picture "tells a thousand words".
This reminds me of: 2 Timothy 3:5
"Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away."

So, they want peace and safety? At what cost I might ask? By legislation, no less!
